Don Mattingly Returns on a Two-Year Deal
The Philadelphia Phillies have officially named don mattingly as their manager on a two-year contract. Mattingly originally took over the role as interim manager 28 games into the season after Rob Thomson was fired in April.
During his interim tenure, Mattingly guided the squad to a 79-55 record. Despite a four-game skid late in the regular season, Philadelphia secured a National League wild-card spot and advanced to face the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card series before bowing out in a decisive Game 3.
Managerial Background and Career
At 65 years old, don mattingly brings extensive experience to the Phillies dugout. Initially hired last season as a bench coach, his career includes managing the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011 to 2015 and the Miami Marlins from 2016 to 2022, where he earned NL Manager of the Year honors in 2020. His overall managerial record stands at 968-1,005 with five playoff appearances. Before moving into coaching and managing, he enjoyed a 14-year playing career as captain of the New York Yankees.
Looking Ahead to 2027
As preparations begin for the upcoming season, the Phillies face several roster questions. Key players such as Alec Bohm, Luis Arraez, and Jose Alvarado are entering free agency, while right field and bullpen depth remain areas to address. Team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and don mattingly are scheduled to address the media in an end-of-season news conference.
