Employees' Provident Fund Organisation Extends Deadline
The employees' provident fund organisation has officially pushed back the due date for submitting the Electronic Challan-cum-Return and remitting statutory provident fund contributions for the wage month of September 2026. Establishments now have until October 31, 2026, to complete these filings instead of the previous October 15 deadline.
On October 13, 2026, the regulatory body released an official circular authorizing this change under paragraph 28(3) of the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 1952. This adjustment applies exclusively to the September wage month, allowing businesses extra time to fulfill their compliance requirements without facing immediate penalties.
Reasons Behind the Schedule Revision
The decision by the employees' provident fund organisation comes directly in response to the recent upward revision of the EPF wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, which took effect on September 17, 2026. Following this mid-month policy shift, numerous employers and stakeholders reported various operational and technical hurdles.
Because the wage ceiling change happened mid-month, businesses faced complicated payroll updates and necessary adjustments to their contribution calculations. The newly granted timeline is intended to help organizations accurately manage these changes and ensure proper statutory compliance.
What Employers Should Check
Establishments utilizing the extra time should carefully review their updated payroll systems and contribution math to match the new ₹25,000 wage ceiling framework. By taking advantage of the window up to October 31, 2026, payroll administrators can avoid calculation errors before submitting their final records to the employees' provident fund organisation.
