Veteran Actor Choi Bool-am Passes Away
Beloved South Korean actor 최불암 (born Choi Young-han), widely cherished as the nation's ultimate father figure, has passed away at the age of 87. According to broadcast industry reports, he died on the night of October 29 at approximately 10:30 PM while receiving inpatient treatment at a hospital in Gangseo-gu, Seoul.
The veteran performer had faced health complications after undergoing back disc surgery in March of the previous year, which caused mobility difficulties. Although he focused on rehabilitation, his health deteriorated rapidly, resulting in his departure from the KBS 1TV cultural program Korean Table, which he had hosted for 14 years starting in 2011.
A Legendary Career in Television and Film
Born in 1939, Choi debuted in the theater production Hamlet with the Experimental Theater Company in 1959 and joined the National Theater Company in 1965. Over a 67-year acting career spanning television, film, and stage, he tackled diverse roles as both supporting characters and elders.
He entered television as a special talent recruit for Seoul Central Broadcasting (now KBS) in 1967. His career was defined by landmark television series that captured the hearts of the public. He famously portrayed Inspector Park Young-han in MBC's Chief Inspector and Chairman Kim in Country Diaries, a role he played alongside long-time colleague Kim Hye-ja for 22 years. His extensive filmography also includes cinematic works such as The General's Son, The Age of Success, and Good Windy Days.
Public Service, Politics, and Legacy
Beyond acting, Choi ventured briefly into politics, serving as a member of the 14th National Assembly from 1992 to 1996 under the Unification National Party after encouragement from Hyundai Group Honorary Chairman Chung Ju-young. He also dedicated over four decades to serving as the head of the Green Umbrella Children's Foundation, a commitment sparked by a memorable charity-driven scene in Country Diaries.
His surviving family includes his wife, actress Kim Min-ja, and their son and daughter. His funeral will be conducted as a Green Umbrella Children's Foundation funeral at the Asan Medical Center to commemorate his enduring dedication to youth welfare.
