Athletic vs Real Sociedad: Athletic Club Wins Electric Basque Derby

Athletic Secures 2-1 Victory in Electric Basque Derby

Athletic Club secured a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad in an electric Basque derby at San Mamés. The result gave the home side a fresh boost in the league standings while halting their opponents' run of four consecutive victories.

The encounter, part of the eleventh matchday of LaLiga, delivered a fast-paced and high-intensity contest in front of 50,092 spectators. Before the opening whistle, Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón presented his Yashin Trophy to the home crowd, and a moment of silence was observed for the victims of the Urda railway accident.

First-Half Drama and Goals

The opening forty-five minutes moved at a relentless pace. Athletic dominated the early exchanges, though Berenguer missed an open-goal opportunity in the opening minute, and teammate Maroan had to leave the field in tears due to an early injury. The pressure paid off in the 14th minute when Nico Williams sent a deep pass to Iñaki Williams, who slipped past Sarr and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Remiro to make it 1-0.

Real Sociedad responded in the 30th minute when Luka Sučić unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box to level the score. Goalkeeper Unai Simón kept Athletic level shortly after with crucial stops against Barrenetxea and Oyarzabal. Just before halftime, Aranburu fouled Nico Williams inside the area, resulting in a penalty that Berenguer successfully converted in stoppage time to restore the home team's lead at 2-1.

Second-Half Action and Defensive Resilience

The second half maintained a back-and-forth tempo as Real Sociedad pressed forward in search of an equalizer. Substitute Soler proved particularly dangerous for the visitors, forcing another remarkable save from Simón with a powerful volley in the 72nd minute, while also narrowly missing the target later in the half. Despite late pressure from the visitors, Athletic managed to maintain their advantage until the final whistle.
