cruise passenger rescued ionian sea
Greek authorities saved a 44‑year‑old Salvadorian woman who entered the Ionian Sea on her own after leaving the Royal Caribbean vessel Odyssey of the Seas. The coastguard confirmed that she spent roughly twenty hours in the water before being recovered.

The incident began early Friday when the cruise liner was navigating southwest of Zakynthos. According to a coastguard spokesperson, the passenger said she jumped because she wanted to leave the ship. Following the report, two patrol boats and a navy helicopter were dispatched, and nearby vessels, including the Odyssey of the Seas itself, were redirected to assist.

A cargo freighter later sighted the woman floating inside an orange life ring. The crew tossed a rope to her, and a Greek coastguard patrol boat pulled her aboard. Video released by the coastguard shows the rescue taking place in darkness, with the rope and life ring clearly visible.
Immediate medical care
After being lifted onto the patrol boat, the passenger was taken to the port of Katakolo. From there she was transferred to a hospital in the nearby town of Pyrgos for a series of health examinations, including a psychiatric assessment ordered by a local prosecutor.
Background on the vessel
Odyssey of the Seas measures 1,138 feet in length and can host up to 4,198 guests. The ship operates seasonal itineraries around the Greek islands, a popular route for cruise tourists.
Previous overboard incidents
While this case involved a voluntary jump, it follows other reported overboard events involving cruise ships, such as a 2025 incident where a passenger leapt from a Royal Caribbean vessel near San Juan to avoid a gambling debt.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the passenger’s motives beyond her own statement. The investigation remains ongoing, with the prosecutor’s office overseeing the psychiatric evaluation.
