Central Information and Broadcasting Minister एल मुरुगन has submitted his resignation from the Union Cabinet and also announced that he will vacate his Rajya Sabha seat, stating a plan to focus on strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
In a detailed letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the minister explained that serving in the central government for five years under Modi’s leadership has been the highest honour of his public life. He expressed a wish to return to the grassroots work that originally motivated him to enter politics.
The resignation letter outlines his intention to travel across every village and street in Tamil Nadu, meet local citizens, and work alongside party cadres to expand the BJP’s presence. He emphasized that the party’s development agenda – “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” – should reach every household.
Born into a labor‑working family in Konur village, एल मुरुगन’s parents were daily‑wage earners who also tended cattle. He has repeatedly highlighted that his rise from such modest origins to a Union minister was possible because of the BJP’s tradition of promoting ground‑level workers. During his college years he was associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and spent nearly three decades in ABVP and BJP roles, adhering to the principle “nation first, party second, self last.”
He has served two terms as a Rajya Sabha member and held responsibilities in ministries covering information and broadcasting, parliamentary affairs, fisheries, and animal husbandry. He also acted as vice‑chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes.
In his letter, एल मुरुगन praised several development projects in Tamil Nadu that he believes were facilitated by the Prime Minister, including the Chennai Metro expansion, the extension of the Tuticorin port, upgrades to national highways, and the redevelopment of 26 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He also noted the central government’s support for fishermen’s welfare and security in conflict‑prone coastal areas.
Having stepped down, एल मुरुगन plans to dedicate his full energy to grassroots organization, aiming to increase BJP’s seat share in Tamil Nadu and contribute to the party’s goal of securing another term at the centre. He affirmed his commitment to work “hand‑in‑hand” with volunteers and to convey Modi’s inclusive development message across the state.
While his resignation has been announced, official acceptance has not been confirmed in the public domain.
