Fatal Rock Slide Closes Trail Section

A 79-year-old bicyclist lost her life and her husband sustained injuries after a landslide struck them while they were riding along the great allegheny passage trail. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon near Connellsville, positioned between trail mile markers 87 and 88 inside Ohiopyle State Park.

The Fayette County coroner identified the woman as Gail Luck of Wisconsin. Her husband, who was riding with her during the rock fall, was flown to a nearby hospital and is expected to make a full recovery according to authorities.

Investigation and Trail Closure Status

Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) stated that the immediate future of that portion of the trail remains unclear while specialists survey the hillside. Because the DCNR oversees maintenance and monitoring activities in Ohiopyle State Park, the agency is leading the active investigation.

The affected stretch of the trail spans from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland, and will stay closed until experts confirm it is safe to clear accumulated debris and verify whether the hillside remains an active slide zone.

Alternative Travel and Shuttle Arrangements

To assist visitors caught unaware by the closure, the GAP Conservancy organized a dedicated shuttle service operating between Connellsville and Dunbar. The nonstop transport runs from morning until afternoon, taking travelers to a point where they can hike or bike along the Sheepskin Trail to reconnect with the main path.

Conservancy representatives noted they are underwriting the unexpected transit costs using maintenance funds through Thursday, after which travelers will need to coordinate directly with local commercial shuttle operators listed on the organization's website.
