Former Purdue Forward Trey Kaufman-Renn Signs With Kansas Basketball
Former Purdue standout trey kaufman-rrenn has officially signed with Kansas while pursuing an unprecedented sixth year of eligibility in college basketball.

Former Purdue standout trey kaufman-renn has officially joined the Kansas men's basketball program for the upcoming season. The school confirmed the addition as the experienced forward actively pursues a sixth year of collegiate eligibility.
Kansas head coach Bill Self noted that the player has already enrolled in classes and began practicing. Because of his extensive background and high basketball IQ, the program anticipates a fast transition despite joining the team late in the offseason preparations.
Eligibility Pursuit and Legal Status
The path to joining the Jayhawks involves ongoing legal proceedings regarding player eligibility. Kaufman-Renn secured a temporary restraining order in September followed by a preliminary injunction earlier in the month against the NCAA. These legal rulings currently clear him to take the court for Kansas.
His case for an additional campaign relies on his redshirt season from 2021-22. He argues that under the updated NCAA five-for-five age-based eligibility framework, he would not have utilized a redshirt year and would have completed four playing seasons instead of five.
Career Background at Purdue
Before his transition, the 6-foot-9 power forward established himself as one of the premier frontcourt players in the country. Following his redshirt year, he started 112 games across his final three campaigns with the Boilermakers. His postseason experience includes appearances in a national championship game, an Elite Eight, and a Sweet 16.
His offensive production peaked during the 2024-25 season when he averaged 20.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest. He followed that up during his fifth-year senior campaign by posting averages of 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds.
Although the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him with the 59th overall pick in June's NBA draft, he did not sign a professional contract with the franchise despite participating in five summer league contests.
Impact on the Kansas Roster
The Jayhawks gained an open roster spot following a season-ending injury to freshman Grant Mordini. With the addition of Kaufman-Renn, Kansas now features three players utilizing court battles to fight for an extra year of participation, joining returning starters Melvin Council Jr. and Tre White.
Kansas is scheduled to tip off its 2026-27 regular season campaign at home against Fordham on November 2.
