Traveler Stopped at German Airport With Hidden Reptiles
German customs authorities recently intervened when a passenger attempted to smuggle a large collection of exotic animals through a customs exit. The incident resulted in cologne airport venomous snakes seized alongside numerous lizards tucked away inside personal items.
Officers at the facility noticed that the 45-year-old traveler appeared conspicuously nervous while selecting the green exit designated for passengers with nothing to declare. Authorities administered a drug test, which returned a positive result for cocaine. Although subsequent suitcase inspections revealed no narcotics, officials uncovered an extensive collection of wildlife.
Details of the Concealed Cargo
The inspection of the traveler's luggage revealed vipers, rattlesnakes, iguanas, and various other species hidden creatively inside cream containers, shampoo bottles, plastic storage containers, and rolled balls of socks. According to customs spokespersons, officials have encountered many unusual souvenirs over the years, but finding 37 live venomous snakes and 55 lizards originating from Mexico was an unprecedented discovery.
Authorities noted that some of the creatures were kept under inhumane conditions, while others had unfortunately perished during the long journey from Mexico City via Istanbul.
Customs Enforcement and Animal Welfare
When questioned by officers, the unnamed passenger claimed he was transporting the animals simply as a favor for an acquaintance from Brazil. Following the inspection, he was denied entry into the country and sent back on a flight to Istanbul. Meanwhile, the surviving animals were transferred to a specialized snake farm in Germany to receive proper care.
Customs representatives highlighted that nationwide enforcement efforts remain high, noting that the previous year recorded over 1,300 seizures involving more than 56,600 protected animals, plants, and related products. A similar historical incident at the same facility occurred six years prior, when officers intercepted rare reptiles smuggled inside parcels of sweets and toys destined for private buyers.
