Government Announces New Retention Policy and Tenure Update for Agniveer
The Union Cabinet has cleared a plan allowing the absorption of 25% of personnel into regular forces, while offering an extra two-year service period to others.

Government Updates Tenure and Absorption Rules
The Union Cabinet has approved a modified framework allowing the absorption of 25% of agniveer personnel into regular military ranks based on merit. Chief of Defence Service General N.S. Raja Subramani and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the update during a media briefing at the National Media Centre in New Delhi.
Under the revised guidelines, personnel who are not immediately absorbed into the 25% bracket will receive an option for a two-year engagement extension. Once this secondary service period concludes, all willing participants will have the opportunity to join the armed forces permanently, pending objective selection criteria.
Government Framework and Structural Reforms
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the policy adjustment serves as a continuation of long-term structural reforms designed to build a younger, fitter, and technologically advanced military. Officials noted that if a candidate is not retained following the completion of the six-year combined timeframe, there will be no reservation allocated for them in general government positions.
The original short-term recruitment model was introduced in 2022 to enlist youth aged 17.5 to 23 across all three military branches. Current estimates indicate there are approximately 300,000 active service members enrolled under the framework.
