HPCL Visakh Refinery Fire Erupts After Explosion in Andhra Pradesh
A major fire broke out at the HPCL Visakhapatnam refinery following an explosion on Monday night, prompting immediate evacuations and emergency response efforts.

Overview of the Incident
An unexpected explosion late Monday evening triggered a major emergency response at the industrial plant, capturing widespread attention as thick black smoke blanketed the surrounding area. The hpcl visakh refinery fire erupted at approximately 10:15 pm at the sulphur pitch located within the industrial site situated at Malkapuram.
Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported following the incident. However, the sudden blast and subsequent flames caused immediate panic among employees and local residents after footage of the event began circulating widely across various social media platforms.
Emergency Response and Containment Efforts
Emergency crews rushed to the scene immediately to tackle the escalating situation. Deputy inspector of factories V. Suresh stated that five dedicated fire tenders from the facility were deployed to suppress the flames. Although authorities managed to bring the main blaze under control, thick smoke continued to billow from the pitch, fueling ongoing concerns among the public and workforce.
Regional fire officer Niranjan Reddy noted that residual fires remained active at two distinct locations, prompting firefighters to use specialized foam to fully extinguish them. As a precautionary measure, staff members present at the site were safely evacuated following the initial blast.
Preliminary Findings and Assessment
Initial evaluations indicate that an overhead electrical line may have been the catalyst for the accident. Cooling operations commenced shortly after the flames were contained, while a comprehensive evaluation of the overall structural and material damage remains pending.
Official investigations continue to look into the precise sequence of events that led to the blast at the hpcl vizag plant, with further updates expected once safety audits and structural inspections conclude.
