India's foreign exchange reserves decreased by $2.69 billion to stand at $717 billion during the week ending October 30, according to official figures.

Overview of Weekly Forex Movement
India's foreign exchange reserves declined by $2.691 billion down to a total of $717.056 billion for the week ending October 30. Figures published by the Reserve Bank of India show that the drop impacted multiple parts of the overall financial kitty.
When measured in local currency, total foreign exchange reserves reached Rs 68.09 lakh crore as of October 30, representing a reduction of Rs 24,777 crore from the preceding week.
Breakdown of Declining Components
The weekly reduction stemmed mostly from decreases in the country's foreign currency assets and gold holdings. Foreign currency assets, which represent the largest portion of the reserves, went down by $2.088 billion to sit at $591.118 billion.
Simultaneously, gold reserves contracted by $559 million, bringing their total valuation to $102.591 billion. Additionally, Special Drawing Rights allocations from the International Monetary Fund dropped by $47 million to $18.558 billion.
Conversely, the nation's reserve position alongside the International Monetary Fund managed a small rise of $3 million, reaching $4.790 billion.
Broader Economic Context and Comparison
Despite the recent weekly setback, the broader standing of India's foreign exchange reserves stays ahead of levels recorded at the close of March. Since that period, total reserves have grown by $25.949 billion, or Rs 2.55 lakh crore in rupee terms.
On a year-on-year timeline, the reserves show a notable expansion of $27.324 billion, alongside a rupee increase of Rs 6.86 lakh crore. Over the yearly duration, foreign currency assets posted the largest individual growth of $26.527 billion, while gold holdings expanded by $865 million.
While the most recent figures highlight a temporary weekly contraction, officials indicate that the overarching accumulation remains elevated compared to historical checks from earlier months and the previous year.
