Tragedy Strikes During Festival Celebrations
A fatal kolkata stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal resulted in 19 deaths and left 25 people injured on Saturday evening. Police reported that a microphone warning informed visitors that the structure was in poor condition and at risk of collapsing, which may have sparked widespread panic.
Preliminary findings by law enforcement indicated that the disaster stemmed from a combination of gross mismanagement by event organisers, confusing announcements, and a sudden rush of visitors looking for shelter from a downpour during Saptami celebrations. Investigators noted that approach roads and gates were narrow, and crowds attempted to escape through the main entrance as chaos ensued.
Investigation and Official Response
Kolkata Police are currently examining a video of the warning announcement to identify who made it and establish what prompted the alert. Authorities have collected CCTV footage, gathered forensic evidence from the site, and recorded statements from eyewitnesses and locals. Investigators are also reviewing whether inadequate deployment of police personnel and private security guards worsened the situation.
Chief minister Suvendu Adhirani blamed the alleged callousness of the organisers and stated that a thorough investigation would take place. Meanwhile, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita on roads adjoining the pandal until October 20.
Support for Affected Families and Medical Updates
The state government announced a compensation package consisting of Rs 25 lakh and a Group D government job for the family of each deceased victim. Additionally, authorities formed a panel to review safety protocols across major Durga Puja pandals and recommend immediate corrective actions.
Regarding those harmed in the chorbagan durga puja pandal stampede, medical officials reported that 14 of the injured individuals were receiving treatment at a private hospital, with three placed in the intensive care unit. One patient remained in critical condition, while two others in the ICU showed signs of improvement.
