Historic Upheaval Reshapes the Latest AP Poll
Miami has ascended to No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 for the initial time since 2002, while BYU secured the No. 2 position following an unprecedented weekend of college football upsets. Five of the top seven teams suffered losses during a wild slate of games, marking a first in the 90-year history of the ap poll.
The Hurricanes capitalized on the chaos by defeating rival Florida State in double overtime to remain undefeated. Securing 40 of 70 first-place votes from the media panel, Miami edged out BYU by just 22 points in the updated ap college football poll.
BYU Surges Alongside Top Contenders
BYU achieved its highest ranking since its 1984 national championship season by defeating Notre Dame in a home thriller as a double-digit underdog. The Cougars captured 20 first-place votes and finished 26 points ahead of Ohio State, which rounded out a tightly bunched top three with nine first-place votes.
Despite losses, Notre Dame and Georgia maintained their places in the top five due to the strong resumes built during their previous 6-0 starts. Georgia dropped from the top spot after a home loss to Auburn, making them the second consecutive top-ranked team to fall to an unranked opponent following Texas's defeat a week prior.
Conference Shifts and Notable Drops
The widespread turbulence caused significant movement further down the rankings. Following losses, the alabama schedule pressure intensified as the Crimson Tide fell seven spots to No. 13 after losing an away game to Tennessee. Meanwhile, Texas plummeted 12 rungs to No. 19 following a home defeat against Florida.
Every single spot in the Top 25 features a different team this week, although only two total squads dropped completely out of the rankings. Analysts continue to monitor upcoming matchups as conference play unfolds across the country.
