New Docuseries Details the Life and Struggles of Matthew Perry
A fresh look into the life and passing of the beloved television star has arrived on streaming platforms. Mary Robertson's three-part Netflix documentary, titled “The One About Matthew Perry”, debuted on October 27, offering unprecedented insight into the personal battles faced by matthew perry during and after his time on the hit sitcom Friends.
Production Pauses and Addiction Battles
According to close friend Roger Costillo, production on the iconic comedy series had to halt temporarily in 2001 while the actor sought treatment. Family members noted that the star experienced significant guilt because so many crew members relied on the show for their livelihoods, yet he recognized that seeking treatment was essential for his health.
During a 2002 interview with Larry King featured in the project, the actor explained that he requested the maximum possible time away from the producers to focus entirely on his sobriety without any guarantees of returning.
Navigating Filming and Recovery
Fans may recall physical changes across various seasons of the program. The actor's memoir previously noted that his weight fluctuation tracked his struggles, with weight gain pointing to alcohol use and a leaner frame indicating pill use. His sister, Mia Perry Bowick, shared that during the seventh season, he commuted between a Malibu rehab facility and the television set to film the wedding finale for his character Chandler and Courteney Cox's character Monica.
Bowick mentioned that both sides of the family watched the filming because everyone worried about his future, describing the challenge of maintaining relationships while fighting severe addiction as nearly impossible.
Remembering the Funeral and the Friends Cast
The final installment of the docuseries revisits the actor's 2003 funeral service, which was attended by close friends and family members. Bowick recalled that Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc arrived together. Aniston greeted the family with a large embrace, and all five co-stars stood by the open casket holding hands while crying together.
