New York City Marathon Prepares for Historic 50th Anniversary Race
Nearly 60,000 participants prepare for the milestone 50th anniversary edition of the TCS New York City Marathon across the five boroughs.

Historic Milestones and Participant Turnout
As New York City prepares for a milestone celebration, the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon is shaping up to be one of the deepest and most competitive editions in race history. Nearly 60,000 people are expected to participate as a runner in this year's event, while millions of spectators line the streets to support them.
The race takes place on Sunday, November 1, marking the 50th anniversary of the iconic five-borough course. The event has evolved over decades from a local road race into a premier global sporting spectacle.
The TCS NYC Marathon Course Breakdown
The course spans 26.2 miles across the city's five boroughs. The competition begins on Staten Island, where participants cross the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn and Queens before entering Manhattan.
From there, the route leads into the Bronx and loops back down into Manhattan, ultimately concluding with a finish line in Central Park. Charity fundraising efforts have also reached a major milestone, with New York Road Runners announcing that contributions have surpassed $100 million prior to race day.
Personal Journeys and Fundraising Goals
Many competitors take on the course to support charitable causes. Channel 7 Eyewitness News anchors Mike Marza and Liz Cho are participating to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association. The effort is especially personal as they run in honor of their colleague and friend Bill Ritter, who stepped down from the news anchor desk following an early-stage Alzheimer's diagnosis.
Other participants find personal healing through the event. Griffin Oleynick, who faced personal trauma and isolation after leaving a monastery in Italy where he was told to stop running, views his first TCS NYC Marathon as a journey of recovery and community connection through the Prospect Park Track Club.
Security Measures and Broadcast Information
The NYPD plans a heavy presence for the 50th running of the marathon, utilizing hundreds of vehicles and tens of thousands of metal barricades to secure intersections along the route. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that while there are no specific or credible threats, spectator viewing areas in Central Park will feature bag inspections and restrictions on items such as coolers, oversized bags, chairs, umbrellas, and drones.
Live television coverage will be broadcast on WABC-TV, Channel 7, with pre-race coverage starting at 7:00 a.m. ET and live race coverage running from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. ET. Nationally, viewers can watch on ESPN2 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. ET, with Spanish-language coverage available on ESPN3 via the ESPN App and ESPN.com.
