Popular Anime Series Bleach Concludes Its Epic Run After 22 Years
The animated adaptation of the hit manga Bleach has officially concluded after 22 years, wrapping up with a special ending video. Early reactions from viewers have praised the finale of the Thousand-Year Blood War storyline as a perfect ending.
The series follows Ichigo Kurosaki, an orange-haired teenager who possesses the unusual ability to see ghosts. While balancing school and family life, he defends humanity from evil spirits. Alongside One Piece and Naruto, the title is regarded as one of Japan's big three manga, with its animated adaptations helping fuel global popularity for the medium.
Revisiting the Final Arc and Manga Differences
The original television adaptation ran from 2004 to 2012 across 16 seasons, concluding before it caught up to the source material. A decade later, the animated final chapter premiered in 2022, split into four separate chapters with the final run starting in July.
Creator Tite Kubo experienced health issues during the production of the original comic book, leading to an ending that was widely considered rushed and disappointing. Working alongside animation house Pierrot Films, Kubo implemented major changes to the new adaptation to deliver a revised conclusion that fans had long hoped would fix the earlier narrative.
Fan Reactions and Future Teases
Viewers shared emotional goodbyes to the franchise, noting that the revised finale successfully took the original material a step further. Praise was also directed at the series for its positive representation of black characters in a non-stereotypical way within a Japanese art form.
A tease at the conclusion of the final episode has also left supporters hopeful that there may be additional stories to explore within the universe in the future. The series is available to stream globally on Disney+ and via Hulu in the United States.
