September Retail Inflation Rises as प्याज and Food Prices Surge in India

Overview of September 2026 Retail Inflation

India experienced a significant acceleration in food item costs throughout September, led by dramatic spikes in daily essentials. Most notably, the cost of प्याज doubled compared to the previous year, placing severe pressure on household budgets across the country.

According to the October Monthly Economic Review, the overall retail inflation rate based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) climbed to 5.54 percent in September 2026. This figure represents an increase of 71 basis points from the prior month, while consumer food inflation leaped higher to 7.74 percent.

Supply Pressures Behind the Rise of प्याज and Other Commodities

Market analysts point to various supply-side constraints as the main driver behind these escalating expenses. For प्याज, the inventory from the previous Rabi season has been rapidly depleting, and the arrival of the new Kharif crop faced an approximate delay of one month.

Beyond onions, several other essential commodities registered notable yearly increases:

  • Sugar prices climbed by 30 percent.
  • Jaggery costs went up by 23 percent.
  • Refined oil prices rose by 15 percent.
  • Groundnut oil became 14 percent more expensive.
  • Rice prices increased by 8 percent due to rising international demand for Indian rice.

For sugar specifically, factors such as reduced sugarcane production, heavy rainfall, and red rot disease affecting crops contributed heavily to the tight supply, compounded by higher pre-festival demand and reduced global availability.

Rural Versus Urban Impact

The economic burden of these price hikes was distributed unevenly across geographic regions, hitting rural households harder. In September, rural retail inflation reached 6.08 percent, with rural food inflation touching 8.06 percent. In contrast, urban centers recorded an overall retail inflation of 4.88 percent and food inflation of 7.18 percent, reflecting the higher consumption share of food items in rural districts.

Wholesale Trends and Future Outlook

Alongside retail figures, wholesale markets also showed mounting cost pressures. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation accelerated from 9.92 percent in August to 11.39 percent in September. Within wholesale sectors, fuel and power inflation jumped to 25.85 percent, while manufactured products inflation grew to 9.76 percent.

Experts note that if these cost pressures persist, the combination of high food prices and rising wholesale expenses could create a challenging inflation outlook moving forward.
