Star Players Demand 40 Crore Ahead of Indian Premier League Mega Auction
Two star cricketers have reportedly informed their franchises they will only accept retention ahead of the 2028 mega auction if given 40 crore rupees.

Star Demands Challenge Franchises in the Indian Premier League
Preparations for upcoming cricket seasons have hit a hurdle as two prominent players have set a steep condition for their retention. According to recent reports, these cricketers have told their respective teams they expect 40 crore rupees to stay before the 2028 mega auction, with one individual additionally asking for leadership responsibilities.
This development arrives as the Indian Premier League community navigates upcoming deadlines and roster rules. Franchises are currently tasked with submitting their retained and released player lists by November 17, 2026, ahead of a mini auction set for December 16 in Goa.
High Bidding Precedents Fueling New Demands
The motivation behind the heavy financial requests stems from massive payouts seen during prior auctions. In the 2025 mega auction, players commanded exceptionally high figures after bypassing traditional retention. Rishabh Pant entered the auction pool and secured a 27 crore deal with the Lucknow Super Giants, while Shreyas Iyer joined Punjab Kings for 26.75 crore rupees.
Foreign talent also drew substantial investments, as Heinrich Klaasen and Nicholas Poon fetched high retention sums of 23 crore and 21 crore respectively. These transactions demonstrated that elite athletes can surpass standard retention slabs, paving the way for fresh financial negotiations.
Budget Pressures and Future Team Budgets
These escalating financial expectations place pressure on team finances. While each franchise operated with a 120 crore salary purse during the 2025 mega auction, the limit grew to 130 crore for IPL 2027. Projections suggest the purse might reach roughly 150 crore rupees by the 2028 mega auction, though the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not officially confirmed this figure.
If a single participant claims 40 crore rupees, that allocation would consume more than 26 percent of a 150 crore budget. Such heavy spending on one individual leaves limited funds to acquire supporting roster talent and build a balanced squad, complicating strategic planning for management teams across the league.
