Tragedy Strikes During Online Broadcast
A Catholic cleric tragically lost his life when a heavy wooden crucifix collapsed onto him during a religious service. The incident occurred while a priest killed by cross trauma unfolded live on social media as he stood near the altar.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was performing duties at Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil on Saturday. While preparing Communion, the large structure positioned behind the altar unexpectedly tipped forward and struck him directly.
Worshippers Rush to Help
Footage captured by the live broadcast equipment documented the immediate panic inside the building. Attendants and congregants could be heard screaming in distress as they sprinted toward the altar to render aid and call for emergency medical assistance.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil subsequently issued a statement on social media confirming the passing of the parish leader. Tributes also poured in from his former congregation at San Lorenzo in Vinces within Los Ríos province, where he previously served before his assignment in Guayaquil.
Unclear Cause Behind the Collapse
As of Sunday, representatives from the church had not publicly clarified what caused the heavy religious fixture to break loose and fall. The fatal event transpired just a day after the archdiocese publicly congratulated the cleric on his ordination anniversary.
