Details Emerge After Freighter Sinks Off Bulgarian Coast in Drone Attack
A commercial vessel was struck by sea drones and sank off the Bulgarian coast, prompting regional security talks and an ongoing investigation.

Overview of the Incident Where a Freighter Sinks Off Bulgarian Coast
A merchant vessel was struck by multiple sea drones, resulting in its sinking within a NATO country's exclusive economic zone. The Liberian-flagged, Greek-managed Contship Jet tanker was carrying containers on a route from Israel to Romania when the maritime strike occurred.
When the freighter sinks off Bulgarian coast waters, it marks the fifth recorded drone incident in that zone for the month. All 18 sailors on board—comprising 14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians—were safely rescued by local naval and border police forces before being transported to Varna for medical evaluation.
Investigation and Hazardous Cargo Concerns
Following the event, Bulgaria's Military District Prosecutor's Office initiated a preliminary investigation. Reports indicated that some containers carried hazardous items, including flammable liquids, gases, and lithium-ion batteries. Despite this cargo, navy teams tested multiple locations in territorial waters and reported no signs of pollution.
Regional Security Responses
The maritime strike coincided with a ministerial meeting in Sofia where defense leaders from Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey gathered to address regional security. The NATO allies strongly condemned the attacks on commercial ships and infrastructure, agreeing to enhance intelligence sharing, early warning systems, and regional coordination.
While Russia is widely suspected of directing the recent wave of Black Sea strikes, top officials have acknowledged the difficulty of formally proving direct state responsibility. In response to these escalating security challenges, NATO leadership noted that the alliance has reinforced its eastern flank posture, which includes expanded counter-drone capabilities.
