Late Goals Define Latest Flyers vs Red Wings Clash
Andrew Copp broke a late tie to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. The outcome sent the visitors to their franchise record-extending ninth consecutive defeat to begin the new campaign.
The latest flyers vs red wings matchup saw Detroit improve their standing while leaving their opponents still searching for their first victory of the year.
Detroit Red Wings Secure Late Victory
With the game tied heading into the final stages of regulation, Andrew Copp found the back of the net with a point-blank shot with only 4:38 remaining on the clock. The decisive strike sealed the win for the hosts, though Philadelphia nearly equalized in the dying seconds when Oliver Bonk shot wide from 10 feet out with just eight seconds left on the game clock.
Earlier in the contest, the detroit red wings responded to an early deficit. Dylan Larkin helped orchestrate the tying sequence by sliding a pass across the slot on a 2-on-1 rush, allowing Anton Johansson to net his first career NHL goal at 4:31 of the second period. Johansson became the third Scandinavian rookie to score his maiden goal this season for Detroit, joining fellow Swede William Wallinder and Norwegian Michael Brandsegg-Nygard.
Philadelphia Flyers Struggle to Start Season
The flyers opened the scoring when Matvei Michkov converted with a baseball-style swing, swatting a bouncing puck past goaltender Daniil Tarasov with 2:28 remaining in the first period. Despite that early momentum, the philadelphia flyers could not hold on.
Goaltender Joseph Woll stopped 24 shots for Philadelphia, while Daniil Tarasov turned away 17 attempts for Detroit. With the loss, the team dropped their record to 0-6-3. The nine-game skid ties for the ninth-longest opening slump in NHL history, and marks the worst start to a season since San Jose began 0-7-2 during the 2024-25 term.
Upcoming Schedule
Looking ahead at the flyers game schedule, Philadelphia will return home to host Ottawa on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Detroit franchise will also remain on home ice to welcome San Jose on Saturday night.
