Reflecting on the Public Role
Stepping into the public eye is a demanding task, especially in the video game industry where community toxicity often targets developers. As the former overwatch director, Jeff Kaplan spent years promoting the popular hero shooter and engaging directly with fans, though it came at a significant personal cost. Kaplan recently shared insights into his time leading the project, noting that while he is naturally introverted and dislikes heavy attention, taking on a public role was necessary at the time for the growth and survival of Overwatch.
According to Kaplan, the strategy behind putting developers in the spotlight was to show players that the game was crafted by real people who shared similar passions and opinions, preventing Blizzard from appearing like a faceless corporation. However, periods of content droughts or major hero adjustments frequently exposed developers to verbal abuse and threats from players.
Stepping Back and Finding Relief
Following his departure from Blizzard in 2021, Kaplan experienced a profound shift by withdrawing from public forums, subreddits, and media interviews. He described this detachment as soothing to his soul, explaining that letting go of the need to see his name in headlines allowed him to fade into the background in a way that felt remarkably positive for his personal well-being.
Reflecting on industry standards, Kaplan pointed out that major studios like Valve and Rockstar successfully promote their titles without designating a single public speaker, suggesting that while a face for a game can foster transparency, it is not strictly mandatory for every studio.
Current Endeavors at Kintsugiyama
Today, the former overwatch director is focused on a brand-new project. Working alongside his team at the newly established studio Kintsugiyama, Kaplan is developing The Legend of California, an open-world multiplayer survival-action game set in the wild west. While the game does not yet have an official release date, interested players can visit its Steam page to request access to upcoming playtests.
