Harmeet Dhillon Leaves Post at Justice Department
Harmeet Dhillon has submitted her resignation as the head of the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the departure on X, confirming the exit of the senior official following a controversial 18-month tenure in the administration of President Donald Trump.
In a social media post, Blanche thanked her for her service, noting she enforced the law and defended civil liberties. Dhillon, a former vice chair of the California Republican Party, stated that serving in the role was an honor and pointed to her work addressing diversity initiatives and student athletics.
Reshaping the Civil Rights Division
During her time leading the division, operations underwent a significant transformation. Approximately 300 lawyers departed and were replaced by personnel aligned with executive branch goals. The office pursued various legal actions and investigations, including a lawsuit filed in September against a Kansas school district regarding parental notification policies on student gender identity, as well as inquiries into dozens of public school districts in Illinois concerning sexual orientation and gender ideology content.
Reactions to the Departure
Advocacy groups responded strongly to the news of the resignation. Representatives from organizations like the Human Rights Campaign criticized the direction of the division during her leadership, calling for congressional oversight to review past actions and evaluate future nominees for the position.
