Jaguar Land Rover Begins Local Production of Defender in India
Jaguar Land Rover has commenced local production of the Defender in India, reducing prices by up to Rs 34 lakh for buyers.

Jaguar Land Rover has officially commenced domestic assembly for its luxury SUV line, marking a major milestone for operations in the region. This strategic shift makes India the first market outside Europe to manufacture the popular vehicle locally.
By transitioning assembly to domestic facilities, the automotive company has substantially reduced costs for domestic consumers. Fully loaded versions of the flagship model now see price cuts reaching up to Rs 34 lakh compared to previous import figures.
JLR India Local Production Defender Details
Production is currently underway at the company's manufacturing site located in Pune. Executives noted that the facility is focusing exclusively on building the land rover defender 110 for domestic buyers. Previously, all units were fully imported, carrying much higher ex-showroom tags of ₹1.13 crore for the 2.0-litre petrol, and ₹1.52 crore for the 3.0-litre petrol and diesel variants.
Under the new domestic setup, the vehicle is offered in both petrol and diesel engine options ranging from 2.0-litre to 3.0-litre displacements within the X-Dynamic HSE derivative.
Defender Price and Market Expectations
With domestic manufacturing now active, the updated defender price structure begins at ₹99 lakh for the 2.0-litre petrol model. Meanwhile, both the 3.0-litre petrol and 3.0-litre diesel versions are priced at ₹118 lakh ex-showroom. Company leadership anticipates that these adjusted figures will drive a 20% increase in sales volume.
Over the past three and a half years, the brand has recorded sales of 9,000 units across the country, establishing the model as a cultural icon rather than just a traditional utility vehicle. Reservations can be placed online or through 32 authorized dealerships, with physical displays expected within ten days and customer deliveries starting on 15 November 2026.
Global production will continue alongside at the Nitra facility in Slovakia, which remains the centre of excellence responsible for international variants like the Defender OCTA, Defender 90, and Defender 130.
