कर्मचारी भविष्य निधि संगठन Prepares Guidelines to Invest Savings in AIFs
The retirement fund body is drafting new guidelines to channel up to 3% of its annual fresh deposits into alternative investment funds.

कर्मचारी भविष्य निधि संगठन Considers Alternative Investment Funds
कर्मचारी भविष्य निधि संगठन is currently working on framing new guidelines that could allow a portion of member deposits to flow into alternative investment funds. Under this developing proposal, up to 3% of the yearly fresh deposits would be directed toward select AIF categories.
The retirement fund manager oversees approximately ₹30 लाख crore in retirement savings for a subscriber base exceeding 30 करोड़ members. If finalized, this strategy would widen the scope beyond conventional options like government securities and bonds, connecting member savings with startups and private equity ventures.
Review and Board Approval Process
Discussions regarding this shift took place during a meeting of the Securities and Exchange Board of India investment committee. The formal proposal is slated for presentation in November before the Central Board of Trustees, which functions under the chairmanship of Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. Any official implementation depends entirely on receiving approval from this board.
Target Investment Categories and Conditions
Under the contemplated guidelines, eligible vehicles include SEBI-registered Category-I and Category-II alternative investment funds. Category-I covers startups, small businesses, infrastructure, and venture capital, while Category-II encompasses private equity, real estate, and private debt. Officials note that these investments carry inherent market risks and do not provide guaranteed returns.
To safeguard investor interests, the proposed rules incorporate strict criteria, such as a minimum fund size of ₹100 crore, caps on exposure to individual funds, restrictions on investments in foreign-registered companies, and provisions ensuring fund manager independence.
