Marvell Announces Major Acquisition Involving Lumentum and Mrvl Stock
Marvell Technology has agreed to acquire optical components maker Lumentum, impacting mrvl stock as investors react to the massive artificial intelligence connectivity bet.

Marvell and Lumentum Agreement Overview
Chip maker Marvell Technology has agreed to buy optical components manufacturer Lumentum to address mounting connectivity demands driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure expansion. Because the transaction is structured as a fixed-ratio deal involving no cash, its precise value depends on the price of Marvell shares, with reported implied enterprise valuations ranging from $80 billion up to $115 billion.
Following the announcement, trading activity showed downward pressure on both equities. Market participants pushed mrvl stock down by 8% on Monday, while Lumentum shares experienced a 13% decline.
Impact on the Data Center and AI Connectivity
Leadership from both organizations highlighted the strategic necessity of combining electrical and optical technologies. Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston described the tie-up as an enormous opportunity, noting that scaling up technology requires semiconductors and optical components to function seamlessly together. Similarly, Marvell CEO Matt Murphy pointed out that exploding demand for sticky solutions keeps products sold out with no immediate changes foreseen.
Through this purchase, Marvell aims to satisfy shifting connectivity requirements across various systems and regions as companies increasingly rely on optical connections to link chips used for training and running large language models. This move follows Marvell's earlier acquisition this year of Celestial AI, a startup focusing on optical interconnect technology.
Partnerships and Future Timeline
Addressing questions regarding Nvidia's investments in related tech companies, Marvell leadership defended the ecosystem structure and reaffirmed commitment to supporting industry partners. Under the terms of the agreement, Lumentum shareholders are set to receive 4.5 Marvell shares for every single Lumentum share they currently hold.
Official estimates indicate that the transaction is anticipated to close during the first half of 2028, marking a significant infrastructure bet for the firms involved.
