Paramount Lands Rights for Red Rising Movie Adaptation
Paramount Pictures has secured the film rights to Pierce Brown's best-selling dystopian sci-fi novel, setting plans in motion for a red rising movie. The studio has tapped filmmaker Francis Lawrence to direct the upcoming adaptation of the first book in the series.
Creative Team and Production Details
Justin Rhodes has been chosen to pen the script for the project. Rhodes previously collaborated with Lawrence while developing a video game adaptation for Netflix. Lawrence and Cameron MacConomy will produce the feature under their banner alongside Francesco Goedhuis, while author Pierce Brown will serve as an executive producer.
Background on the Sci-Fi Universe
The source material blends Roman mythology with science fiction, taking place on a future Mars structured around a color-coded class system led by superior Golds. The narrative focuses on Darrow, a low-ranking Red miner who seeks vengeance and revolution after experiencing personal tragedy and learning the true nature of his society.
The broader literary saga includes six published books with a seventh on the way, having surpassed six million copies sold according to a 2024 announcement by the author. Prior to the current Paramount development, the property underwent feature development at Universal and was previously considered for a series adaptation in the late 2010s.
