Southwest Airlines Elite Status Tiers Are Changing

Southwest Airlines is replacing its traditional two-tier frequent flyer program with a three-tier system featuring silver, gold, and platinum levels. The structural shift is part of an ongoing overhaul by airline executives seeking to increase revenue and introduce new experiences like assigned seating.

Under the updated structure, existing loyalty classifications will transition into the new system while introducing fresh qualification requirements and benefits.

New Loyalty Program Structure and Requirements

The legacy A-List and A-List Preferred statuses will officially retire on January 1. Instead, the airline is introducing distinct thresholds for engagement:

  • Silver Status: Former A-List members will move into Silver. This tier requires 35,000 Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) or 25 qualifying flights, and offers a 40% points-earning bonus on flights alongside Group 1 boarding.
  • Gold Status: Former A-List Preferred members will shift to Gold. Achieving this tier requires 65,000 TQPs or 50 qualifying flights, providing a 60% flight earnings bonus and pre-Group 1 boarding.
  • Platinum Status: A brand-new top tier for the most engaged customers, requiring 140,000 TQPs or 100 qualifying flights. Platinum members receive a 120% points-earning bonus, priority boarding ahead of Gold members, and unlimited Companion Pass trips.

Customers can earn 1 TQP per $1 spent using Southwest co-branded credit cards issued by Chase.

Changes to the Companion Pass and Mid-Tier Perks

The airline is also modifying how travelers earn its popular Companion Pass. While current pass holders retain their benefits for the duration of their term, future earnings starting with the 2027 earning year will rely on TQPs, qualifying flights, milestone rewards, or reaching Platinum status. Previously, members needed 135,000 qualifying points or 100 one-way flights.

Additionally, Southwest is adding mid-tier rewards for customers between status levels. Travelers reaching 20,000 points or 15 qualifying flights can select between 2,000 extra Rapid Rewards points or two preferred seat coupons. Hitting 95,000 points or taking 75 qualifying flights grants three Companion Pass trips.

Broader Network Updates

Alongside the loyalty shake-up, Southwest is expanding international airline partnerships and building Icon airport lounges in four cities with Chase, with more locations anticipated. Executives note that these modifications aim to recognize and reward frequent flyers more frequently throughout their travel journey.
