Tamil Nadu Launches Vetri Veedu Initiative
The Tamil Nadu government has officially issued an order allocating Rs 3,500 crore to kick off the initial phase of a major rural housing program. Under this newly announced project, authorities have granted approval to construct 70,000 houses across rural regions during the current year.
Beneficiary Selection and Priorities
Officials have established clear guidelines regarding who receives priority for obtaining a new வீடு under this program. Families currently residing in temporary or vulnerable structures—such as huts made of leaves, grass, mud, bamboo, or timber, as well as dwellings with cement sheet walls, tin roofs, palm leaves, tarpaulins, or asbestos sheets—will be given first preference.
Grant and Size Specifications
Selected applicants will receive a maximum financial subsidy of up to Rs 5 lakh per housing unit. Regarding dimensions, each completed dwelling must measure a minimum of 360 square feet and can reach a maximum size of 500 square feet, which includes the kitchen area.
Additional Financial Support and Loan Options
For individuals who wish to build a slightly larger residence, supplementary loan assistance has been made available through formal banking channels. Beneficiaries can secure a loan of Rs 50,000 carrying a 6 percent interest rate via the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihoods Mission. Alternatively, they can obtain a loan of Rs 1 lakh through cooperative or commercial banks. Furthermore, the state administration will shoulder a 3 percent annual interest subsidy on these approved bank loans, provided the recipients maintain timely monthly repayments through authorized financial institutions.
