Tragic Collision on North Carolina Road
An impaired driver crossed the center line of a wooded, two-lane road and plowed into a group of cyclists in North Carolina, leaving one dead and nearly two dozen hurt. The tragic incident unfolded on a Saturday morning as riders traveled together along Optimist Farm Road in Wake County.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the oncoming black passenger car drove straight into the assembly of riders. After striking the group, the vehicle continued driving for roughly a half-mile before veering off the left side of the roadway and coming to a stop in a ditch.
Casualties and Emergency Response
First responders arrived at the scene to find widespread injuries among the group. Authorities confirmed that 63-year-old Cary resident Patrick Allen Turner lost his life in the crash. Chief LeRoy Smith of the Holly Springs Fire Department reported that 22 other individuals sustained injuries.
Emergency personnel transported seven people suffering from more serious conditions to regional trauma centers. Another 15 participants were admitted to local hospitals for medical care.
Driver Arrested and Facing Felony Charges
Authorities identified the driver as 76-year-old Donald Robert Morris-Jones of Apex, North Carolina. Law enforcement took him into custody following the incident.
Morris-Jones faces multiple felony counts, which include driving while impaired, serious injury by a vehicle, and hit-and-run causing serious injury or death. Court records indicate he is scheduled to appear in court on Monday afternoon, while officials work to establish whether he has legal representation.
Details From the Scene
Footage from the aftermath captured law enforcement officers inspecting a stack of damaged bikes leaning against a roadside guardrail. Several members of the cycling group remained at the site, including one participant wearing a helmet while making a phone call.
A member of the group noted to local media affiliates that the riders frequently traversed the Wake County route together as part of their regular club activities.
