Survival After a Royal Caribbean Cruise Overboard Incident
A 44-year-old woman was successfully rescued from the water following a dramatic royal caribbean cruise overboard event in European waters. Authorities confirmed that the passenger spent nearly a day at sea before being pulled to safety.
Cruise Passenger Rescued in the Ionian Sea
The Hellenic Coast Guard reported that the 44-year-old Salvadoran national was traveling aboard the Odyssey of the Seas when the incident occurred. According to the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ship was sailing through the Ionian Sea near the island of Zakynthos on a Saturday when she entered the water.
An extensive search effort was launched involving Greek authorities. During the search, a cargo ship named MSC Rossella III aided operations and located the woman floating inside a bright orange lifebuoy in dark waters. The cargo vessel quickly alerted authorities, enabling a Greek Coast Guard crew to arrive, toss her ropes, and pull her aboard to safety.
Details From the Scene and Hospitalization
A spokesperson for the Coast Guard noted that the passenger stated she jumped off the vessel because she wanted to disembark. Officials confirmed that she spent roughly 20 hours drifting at sea before being rescued.
Following her rescue from the cruise ship overboard scenario, she was transported to the port of Katakolo and admitted to a local hospital. According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, a local prosecutor subsequently ordered a psychiatric evaluation for the passenger.
Previous Incidents Involving Royal Caribbean Vessels
This event follows prior security incidents involving guests leaving vessels operated by the cruise line. In a separate prior event, a male passenger jumped from the Rhapsody of the Seas in San Juan, Puerto Rico, reportedly in an effort to evade a significant gambling debt. That individual survived the jump and was later detained by law enforcement officers.
