Emergency Response Triggered by Laboratory Fire

An emergency was declared at the massive savannah river site in South Carolina after a laboratory fire left one employee with minor injuries. The Department of Energy reported that the incident prompted a rapid response near Aiken, South Carolina, following a fire at the facility.

The facility declared a Site Area Emergency at 5:39 p.m. on Wednesday after the blaze ignited at the research laboratory. Officials temporarily barricaded site entrances as a precaution, while transport restrictions were implemented across nearby rail, river, and air routes.

Containment and Safety Clearances

Authorities successfully extinguished the fire and terminated the emergency status at 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Subsequent radiological surveys confirmed that there were no detectable levels of contamination or harmful releases following the nuclear incident.

A spokesperson for the Department of Energy confirmed that all protective measures had been lifted and site barricades reopened. Highway 125 remained open throughout the event, and traffic routes around the entrances resumed normal operations.

Operational Status and Background

Officials stated that there are currently no operational emergencies or scheduled delays for the installation. Oncoming shift workers and those who had been directed to shelter in place were instructed to return to normal duties, while other employees resumed their schedules.

Constructed during the 1950s, the installation originally featured five reactors built to produce materials used in nuclear weapons, such as tritium and plutonium-239, alongside chemical separation plants. Today, the complex continues its mission managing radioactive waste and nuclear materials while maintaining robust environmental cleanup and safety operations.
