Military Member Injured in Alamodome Rappel Incident
A military service member suffered injuries after falling from the rafters of the Alamodome during a pre-game demonstration ahead of Saturday's utsa football matchup. The accident occurred approximately 15 minutes before kickoff as part of the annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans event.
Four officers were participating in a rappelling stunt meant to bring them down to the turf. During the descent, one of the officers appeared to lose control of his line, resulting in a rapid slide and a subsequent crash onto the playing field.
Response at the Alamodome
Medical staff rushed immediately to the fallen officer to provide on-site attention. He was secured to a stretcher and removed from the venue before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
A university spokesperson confirmed that the rappelling team belonged to Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron, based out of Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis. Officials have not yet disclosed the identity of the service member or the exact severity of his medical condition.
Impact on the UTSA vs Navy Matchup
Following the accident, university representatives released a statement expressing deep sadness over the event and offering thoughts and prayers to the injured soldier, his relatives, and his fellow service members. The institution also noted that support services are being made available for students, faculty, and staff who may have been emotionally impacted by witnessing the accident.
Despite the disruption, the utsa football game proceeded as planned. Officials implemented a brief 10-minute delay to the scheduled kickoff time before allowing the athletic competition against navy football to move forward.
