Crackdown in New Delhi Ahead of Rallies
Indian police took movement founder Abhijeet Dipke and other student figures into preventive detention in New Delhi. The detentions occurred as supporters of ashutosh ranka and various youth factions gathered to protest the jailing of two movement leaders.
The Background of the Demonstrations
The latest wave of protests follows near-daily demonstrations calling for the resignation of India's election chief, Gyanesh Kumar. Critics accuse Kumar of mishandling a controversial revision of voter lists that allegedly favors Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Conversely, government officials maintain that the revisions simply removed duplicate, deceased, and fraudulent entries from the electoral rolls.
Police Action and Restrictions
Ahead of the planned gathering at Central Park, authorities deployed thousands of extra police officers across the capital. Officials closed the park citing administrative reasons and erected metal barricades at key intersections. Despite the heavy security presence and warnings from law enforcement, nearly 500 demonstrators managed to reach Connaught Place to wave flags and shout slogans before being dispersed or detained.
Origins and Political Pressure
The Cockroach Janta Party was established in May following public anger over leaked exam files and youth unemployment under Prime Minister Modi's administration. The movement has quickly gained traction among Gen Z citizens, adding significant pressure to the current government amidst ongoing political friction.
