Overview of Prahaar and the 26/11 Narrative
Avinash Arun's new film, prahaar, explores the sensitive narrative of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the legal proceedings against lone surviving terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab. Starring Rajkummar Rao as Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, the production successfully avoids falling into the trap of political propaganda while highlighting Pakistan's role in sponsoring terrorism.
The Prahaar Movie Portrayal
When the trailer for the prahaar movie was initially launched by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, observers drew comparisons to other politically charged films. However, the finished feature sidesteps the tendency to conflate Islam with terrorism. Director Arun and producer Dinesh Vijan maintain a balanced approach throughout the courtroom proceedings, despite dramatic moments involving Nikam and defense lawyer Abbas Kazmi, played by Sikandar Kher.
Cast Performances and Plot Elements
The biographical drama opens with a courtroom scene where Nikam expresses frustration that the masterminds of the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts—such as Dawood Ibrahim, Tiger Memon, and Pakistan's ISI—had not been brought to justice. It quickly shifts to the events of November 26, 2008, when ten Pakistani terrorists arrived by sea and killed over 189 individuals using automatic weapons and explosives.
Alongside Rajkummar Rao's standout performance, the cast features Jaideep Ahlawat and Ritvik Sahore. Sahore plays Nikam's son, anchoring a family subplot that explores the personal sacrifices and professional pressures faced by India's prominent public prosecutor during the high-stakes trial.
