Remembering Dr Rachna Shroff Oncologist and Researcher
Dr Rachna Shroff oncologist and dedicated physician-scientist who spent her career studying treatments for gastrointestinal malignancies, has died at the age of 47. She passed away following a brief battle with an aggressive form of the disease she dedicated her life to curing.
Diagnosis and Battle with Aggressive Cancer
Earlier in the year, Dr Shroff experienced a swollen lymph node in May, leading to a diagnosis of cancer of an unknown origin. By the end of that month, the condition had spread across her body. While her medical team initially suspected lymphoma, further testing confirmed terminal adenocarcinoma, which develops in the lining cells of internal organs.
Despite her diagnosis, she traveled to attend a major oncology research conference just days afterward to continue raising awareness of recent clinical breakthroughs. In a final interview, she reflected on her journey, noting her lifelong dedication to eradicating pancreatic and liver cancers.
Legacy at the University of Arizona Cancer Center
Serving as the associate director of clinical investigations at the University of Arizona Cancer Center, she played a vital role in advancing clinical research. According to colleagues, she helped propel hundreds of clinical trials forward and successfully recruited bright young minds to the institution.
To ensure her mission continues, an award for young cancer researchers has been established in her name. Friends, colleagues, and supporters raised $1.35 million to support the ongoing award.
Family and Personal Life
Outside of her professional achievements, her primary focus remained her family. She is survived by her husband, Puneet, and their two children, Simran and Sachin. Her family and colleagues remember her for her incredible tenacity, compassionate nature, and enduring professional and personal success.
